Late Season Ice Fishing
The ice fishing season can be broken into three distinct sections; early, middle and late season. As the weather begins to warm, the ice conditions as well as fish behavior changes. Let’s dive into what late season ice fishing is all about.
We caught this crawfish during late ice season. Even they are on the move this time of year.
The first thing to note about late season ice fishing is that ice safety is once again a big deal. As the ice melts, the structural integrity of the ice also fluctuates. Standing water and slush can make for variable conditions as well. Crisp mornings followed by warm afternoons will also affect the ice conditions throughout the day. Keep an eye on these changing conditions and really study the ice to determine the safety factor.
The best thing about late season ice fishing is that the fishing conditions tend to be amazing. The warmer weather gets the fishing moving a little more, making them a little more aggressive. It’s not a guarantee, but this time of year tends to be very productive.
Instead of focusing on the deeper parts of your lake, it’s a great time to go back to the shallows and take advantage of hungry fish. The warm waters and the ice above make for great environment filled with aquatic life. Just the place to find fish!
For baits we stick to the same stuff we use during early ice. Small plastic tubes, spoons and jigs do the trick. Tip them with mealworms or wax worms and you’re bound to find some luck.
Late season ice fishing can be a wonderful experience. Warm and sunny days provide a great backdrop for some awesome fishing. Keep an eye on the ice conditions and have fun out there. This season goes fast so enjoy it while you can!
