A Beginners Guide to Family Fishing Adventures
Fishing is one of the most rewarding outdoor experiences that you can share with your family. It also makes a perfect introduction to all sorts of outdoor experiences. Whether your looking to enjoy some peaceful time in nature or teach your kids about patience and perseverance, a fishing trip can provide lasting memories. Here’s a beginner friendly guide to embarking on your first family fishing adventure.
The first step in your family fishing adventure will be selecting the right location. For beginners, calm lakes or slow moving rivers are ideal. These spots are typically safer and easier for young children to fish in. Research your local parks or public waterways near you that offer an abundance of fish specials and accessible areas for families. One place to look is your local Fish and Game Agency. For instance, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has their Fish Atlas, which is a mapping system that can be used to find your next fishing spot. There is an option to show family friendly fishing spots so you can narrow the options down to kid friendly spots. Its a great way to filter out the best fishing spots for your family.
The next step is gathering the right gear. Having the correct fishing gear is the key to a successful trip. To get started, you’ll need:
Fishing Rod & Reel - A simple push button reel (Also called spin casting) is perfect for the beginner. There are specific sized rods for young children and adults alike.
Bait and Tackle - Using live baits like earthworms is simple and effective. Paired with a bobber, you’ll see the fish biting. Other simple lures like in-line spinners, spoons and swim-baits are also effective at catching many different species of fish. Live bait is easiest, however some prefer artificial lures.
Safety Gear - Don’t look past your safety gear. Life jackets for children, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses are a must. Its also a good idea to keep a simple first aid kit that can tend to minor injuries. One pro tip is to use barbless hooks or bend the barbs off your hooks. This is especially important with childgren. If anyone gets hooked accidentally, the hooks are much easier to remove without the barbs. We will cover this in an upcoming blog post!
Something to consider is borrowing or renting gear if you’re not sure what to buy. Getting started doesn’t need to be expensive. In fact, its common to find quality kids fishing gear at your neighborhood garage sales or eBay. Many fly fishing and outdoor recreation shops offer rental services and local advice to help you plan the perfect trip. Make sure to stop by those stores first when your gathering up your gear. Getting to know your local fishing shop is a huge asset for local fishing knowledge!
Now that you have your gear, its time to make a plan for a fun family fishing outing. Make your family fishing adventure enjoyable by packing a picnic, bring along games for the downtime and prepare for all weather conditions. Take some time to explore the natural surroundings, looking for wildlife and even take a quick swim if the conditions are right.
